Lights, camera, action – Scotland’s first Community Television Network went live in Glasgow on April 19 and will now play a leading role as a ‘crimestopper’.
An impressive line up of personalities headed by Leader of Glasgow City Council Councillor Steven Purcell in turn praised those responsible for bringing in the community safety broadcaster to for their ‘vision’.
Also speaking in support of the project at the well-attended launch in Glasgow City Chambers were the City’s community services supremo Phil Walker, Strathclyde’s Assistant Chief Constable (Community Safety) John Neilson, Strathclyde’s assistant fire and rescue chief Keith Small and Brendan Dick, BT’s general manager for Scotland.
Plasma screens have been installed in a variety of venues around the city, guests were told, enabling the local television network, known as ‘Glasgow Matters’, to deliver up-to-the-minute community safety information to an estimated 500,000 people each week!
CCN says that this type of mass communication increases civic pride, together with reducing crime and the fear of crime …and that’s where we come in.
Crimestoppers Scotland which already plays to mass audiences throughout the country has provided fresh material to publicise the benefits to the public of using 0800 555 111 to report information about crime - anonymously.
The ‘Glasgow Matters’ network will be broadcasting regular updates and features produced by the crime beating charity.
Councillor Steven Purcell, said:” It is vital that we all work together and support projects like this which help to reduce crime and the fear of crime in our city. By broadcasting updatable, informative video and emergency messages, these networks enable our clients to communicate, engage, consult and provide reassurance and to both the general public and the business centre.”
Screen venues include St Enoch Shopping Centre, Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Buchanan Street bus station, Southern General Hospital, Glasgow Central train station, Forge Shopping Centre (Asda), Strathclyde University, Caledonian University plus the Science Centre.
