Crooks could soon get that sinking feeling now that seafarers have been thrown a ‘line’ in order to make waves about drugs, people trafficking and terrorism - anything but plain sailing as one call to Crimestoppers can cuff them!
Crews will be hearing how to contact the only charity helping to solve crime on 0800 555 111 when they’ll be asked to tell what they know, not who they are! |

The link follows talks between us at Crimestoppers Scotland and Newslink, publishers of The Daily Electronic Newspaper which will land many shady operators in deep water.
Newslink was formed in 1997, with the intention of addressing the desire of seafarers to ‘keep in touch with what was happening at home’. It was appreciated that positive news from home could uplift morale so subscribers now include many of the world’s top shipping companies.
Thanks to the close connection with Crimestoppers Scotland crew members who may be harbouring sensitive information will now be able to pass on their information discretely.
Today, Newslink who also provide a DVD quarterly for seafarers comes in English the official maritime language, replacing the previously used native languages.
Newslink is a comprehensive four-page English daily bulletin that brings ‘good news’ to the seafarers from over 30 countries including many Scots.
It contains headline news, regional stories plus top international and sports features.
By clicking the appropriate flag at the top left-hand corner of the page, readers can access their own ‘local’ news pages, said Newslink’s Abu Mehrota, who added: “Technology has brought a great benefit by allowing crews to read all about it while previously news was received by an often unreliable system of twiddling the knobs on radios. We also believe that our link with Crimestoppers hotline 0800 555 111 will bring rewards by cutting crime.”
Life on the ocean wave is better with the Electronics Daily Newspaper. To receive a copy email info@newslinkservices.com. There’s also a quarterly DVD full of atmosphere and detail.
At Crimestoppers Scotland we recognize that the vast majority of seafarers are not only honest but also anxious to live and work in a law abiding society. However, the ship’s will will always be targeted by irganised criminals , as being a potential vehicle to provide a large volume of transportation of all sorts of contraband such as controlled drugs, illegal immigrants. In addition there is always piracy and the theft of ships and their cargoes to be considered. It is because of this that we are operating the Ports and Terminals Initiative to let seafarers know who we are and how to make contact with us anonymously.
