Tops in “Three towns”

By Sgt. Gary Ritchie,
Crimestoppers Scotland's Call Centre Manager

As trailblazers of drinks spiking awareness Safeflo have created quite a 'stir' in the licensed trade with thousands of clubbers now snapping up their tamper proof devices which offer peace of mind to would-be victims - both men and women.

Clubbers at the famous Metro in the seaside town of Saltcoats are the latest to benefit from 2,500 free tops from Strathclyde Police with our hotline number

0800 555 111 on them.

A further 20,000 will be handed out from pubs and clubs in North Ayrshire later this year in a county-wide drive to combat the scourge of drug assisted rape.

And the 18-thousand-strong Dundee University Students Association has undertaken to promote awareness of drink-spiking and how Safeflo can assist in curbing the menace.

Posters and leaflets are being printed to assist their endeavours to keep students safe from ‘date rape’ drugs. Pub and club operators do not have to cough up for Safeflo dispensers as these are free.

The tried and tested Safeflo caps cost just £2 for eight and minimise the risks of substances being added, say the experts.

PC Stephen Carr from Saltcoats police station said the Metro had been chosen for the Ayrshire launch as it was a Mecca for clubbers from Saltcoats, Ardrossan and Stevenston.

And Chief Inspector Bob Pollock of Strathclyde Police who backed the invention, added: ”We all want to enjoy ourselves on a night out and the last thing that anyone wants is to fall victim to spiking. You never know who could be watching your drink and if this campaign can help to spread the message and prevent one person becoming a victim, then it will have become a success.”

Speaking from his Spanish villa, Metro boss Stuart told us: "I have to say that my venue and myself are absolutely delighted to be involved in such a prestigious launch of the drinks safety devices, in conjunction with the police and Crimestoppers Scotland in Ayrshire, and especially proud to be the first of many to do so in the area. For myself and customers the emphasis should be on SAFETY.

PC Liz Morgan with PC Stephen Carr, the front-line force of the launch.

The ‘Stopper on spiked drinks’ campaign is being rolled out across Scotland as a result of the success which flowed from the original ‘pilot’ in Maryhill, Glasgow, before Christmas. Since the launch licensed premises in towns up and down the country have developed a real ‘thirst’ for the Safeflo devices.
